How about if you could improve your drive distance by 100 yards and have improved balance, skill and stamina to stay mentally focused.
Well you can have all this and more, just like the professionals do.
If you are one of the many golf enthusiasts based here on the coast putting in many rounds of golf to improve your game, you will understand that golf is a highly competitive and demanding game which requires immense practice, determination, and patience.
But what about good fitness?
Many years are spent aimed at reaching your absolute best on the course with millions of pounds being spent each year on golf gimmicks and practice aids, videos and equipment aimed at one thing in mind” winning”.
So why is it that many golf players do not take part in improving their balance, inner core strength , power, speed, strength, stamina, mobility, range of movement, breathing and focus?
Originally pushed by Tiger Woods and now by many other pros, golfers have realised the benefits of introducing specific fitness into their game. If you are a frustrated player and feel you are not progressing forward then now's the time to take part in a fitness for golf programme. This will change your game of golf drastically. The pros have realised this and so should you!
Golf fitness consists of some very important areas. These are commonly ignored by the average golf enthusiast. Most players do not warm up or stretch before a round of golf. This is vital and cannot be stressed enough to improve your game and help avoid any nasty time consuming and expensive injuries.
Why warm up?
Your body needs to be prepared for the powerful movement involved in your golf swing. The twisting, coil effect we put our bodies through and expect a large amount of power from is incredibly demanding on your spine and body. If you do not warm up you are pushing your body into a danger zone. Warm muscles are also more responsive and explosive when activated. Mentally your motor skills are fired up and ready for action.
Why stretch before your game?
If your muscles are warm and pliable, they will enable you to achieve a further, safer range of movement, meaning you will be able to create a more dynamic golf swing with less chance of injury. If you have a smoother less restricted range of movement, you will be able to achieve your golf swing with less restriction on other parts of your body, whilst maintaining a perfect base and balance throughout your drive.
What about Cardio?
Cardio exercise is vital to any golf player. If you desire to be lean, fit with energy and focus throughout your round, then now’s the time to start. If you are a regular user of a buggy, how about leaving it behind and taking a brisk stroll around the course. It’s also the way to feeling energised and keeping any excess weight off. Have you ever felt towards the end of your round you loose focus? This is usually due to your cardio fitness. Build your endurance and this will protect your game from fatigue.
Strength and Power!
We all require strength and power in all we do in life. If we have strength in our bodies we remain strong and upright within our posture. Power and strength are vital to golf, especially to protect our spine from injury. Inner core strength is crucial to a safe and powerful swing. Our “inner core” muscles protect our spine and organs, leading to a well balanced posture and a strong protected torso. If you have strength and power you will produce a more powerful ballistic drive. You will also maintain your strength and not fatigue throughout you game, leading to consistent shots.
What type of training should I do?
Firstly seek professional advice. Here you will be in safe hands, ensuring you achieve your goals safely and effectively without any unwanted injuries and set backs. The best form of training for golf is exercise system which is called “functional training” which is basically, exercises designed around the specific movements of golf whilst exercising in different planes of motion. These exercises mimic the movements and demands of the golf swing, stance, etc, using more than one muscle group during an exercise. Your exercises will be tailored around improving posture, balance and the body’s neurological system, also concentrating on commonly neglected areas such as inner core strength. Combine this with 3 times a week aerobic exercise of no less then 20 minutes each session, and you will be on your way to achieving and feeling your very best on and off the golf course.
What about nutrition?
Common sense plays a very important role here regarding nutrition. A good healthy diet will enhance your game immensely. A good nutritional intake will help you to keep focused and energised for your game. Avoid skipping meals and make sure you are always carrying water with you. A bad diet will create fatigue, which can add to depression and frustration within your game. Avoid alcohol and fatty foods. Enjoy fresh foods and fruits to boost your energy.
